Mary's Work
I took my first pottery class from David in February of 1989. He continues to be the strongest and most positive influence on my work. I've also taken classes taught by Elizabeth Woolrych, and attended workshops featuring Cynthia Bringle, Pete Pinell, Paul Soldner, Malcolm Davis, Stephen Hill, and Lynn Smiser Bowers. For additional inspiration I read "CLAY TIMES" and 'CERAMICS MONTHLY." In particular I have had good fortune of knowing Ed Thompson and observing the evolution of his pottery. I became a member of the San Diego Potters' Guild in 1996. My work is constantly changing. Presently most of it is made of high-fired porcelain clay. I used to write poetry, but quit because many of my poems were quite morose. I thought, who wants to be remembered for giving the world another sad story? Now my carved and hand-painted cups and bowls reflect a playfulness I am happy to share. My "signature" is whimsical pottery.
